PR Agencies Take Heed: Mobile Marketing is the Future

Earlier this week, Associate Anna Beaty and I attended a PRSA Colorado luncheon about mobile marketing. This topic is truly fascinating and it's evident from the presentation that mobile marketing is helping to shape the future of marketing and communications. Marketers and PR professionals must incorporate mobile PR campaigns as part of their overall marketing strategies. It is not a just a fad - it's the future.

I'd like to share some interesting tidbits of information courtesy of Greg Olsen of the Growl Agency. Olsen was the speaker at the PRSA event.

  • 80% of the world has a mobile phone! Yes, I said 80%!!!
  • By 2015, more people will access information via their mobile devices vs. their desktop computers.
  • 37% of Americans checked their email in the last 5 minutes. 55% checked it in the last 15 minutes and 44% checked their email in the last 30 minutes. We are truly attached to our phones!
  • In 2011, PayPal reached $4 billion in mobile payments alone!

Olsen's key takeaway: Mobile marketing is something that PR professionals should pay close attention to and they must embrace it or risk falling behind.

Olsen also gave some great examples of companies with fantastic mobile websites. For example, compare the Threadless.com site on your desktop with your mobile device. Here are some screenshots:

Go mobile or go home. PR pros, take heed!
