Try New Angles If Your PR Pitch Doesn’t Work
The beauty of PR is that just because one story doesn’t sell, it doesn’t mean you’ll never get PR. PR people often love the chase of getting PR. Some stories we pitch get picked up right away, some never get picked up at all. But that never stops us for trying.
If we’re having trouble “selling” a story to the media, we often pitch new angles. The best story angles have these factors in common:
Timely: Timely angles sell. Think holidays, special events and seasons.
Newsworthy: Can you relate your pitch to something current in the news?
Unique: Dog bites man isn’t interesting, but man bites dog is.
Relevant: Would someone care about your story? Make it relatable to the common man or woman.
Local: Local news is king. Always find a local tie-in or it’s likely your story won’t get picked up.
So the next time you're stuck, think about different ways you can pitch your story to the media. Remember, there are many ways to skin a cat! (BTW, who came up with that awful "skin a cat" analogy anyway?)
